Grantham House is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Grantham, with parts of the structure dating back to the 14th century. Over the centuries, it has been home to several notable residents and has witnessed the town’s rich and evolving history. Its architecture features a blend of medieval, Georgian, and later additions, reflecting its long-standing role in the community. Now carefully restored, the house offers a unique glimpse into England’s heritage, right in the heart of town. The peaceful gardens, complete with ancient trees and the River Witham flowing nearby, provide a tranquil retreat for both locals and visitors.

The hidden architectural gem in Grantham town centre is now open to visitors for the first time in its long history. The Grade I listed property on Castlegate, along with its stunning five-acre gardens, is free to explore and aims to become a vibrant community hub and major tourist attraction.

Previously a private residence, the house was little known – even to many locals. Thanks to a £105,000 grant from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), matched by the National Trust, essential restoration and upgrades have transformed it into an accessible public venue. Grantham House offers a range of attractions including a riverside meadow, walled gardens, woodland walk, expansive lawns with games like croquet and giant chess, a café, and a second-hand bookshop. Rooms are also available for hire.

The site will operate in collaboration with neighbouring St Wulfram’s Church, offering joint activities such as yoga and shared fundraising efforts.

Grantham House is open daily from 10am to 5pm until October. From then until March, it will be open Thursday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm. Entry is free to all visitors, whether or not they are National Trust members, as part of the Trust’s initiative to broaden access to heritage and green spaces.
