Located between Peterborough and Yarwell Junction in Cambridgeshire, Nene Valley Railway is a beautifully preserved heritage railway offering visitors a nostalgic journey through the English countryside. Spanning over 7.5 miles, the line stops at charming stations including Orton Mere, Overton, Wansford, and Yarwell Junction.
Wansford is the main station and a hub of activity. It’s home to a welcoming café serving breakfast, lunch, and sweet treats, along with a well-stocked gift shop, children’s play area, miniature railway (weather permitting), and picturesque picnic spots by the River Nene.
Nene Valley Railway is open most of the year, with train services operating on selected days, particularly weekends and during school holidays. The main station office is generally open daily from 10am to 3pm, but it’s advisable to check ahead for service times.
Visitors can enjoy more than just the train rides. Scenic riverside walks, wildlife spotting at nearby nature reserves, a sculpture trail, and access to local attractions like Peterborough Cathedral and Railworld Wildlife Haven make it a great day out for all ages.
The railway also hosts a fantastic range of seasonal events. Upcoming highlights include “Thomas’s Big Adventure” on 1st and 22nd August, “Thomas and the Travelling Post Office” on 2nd August, and the ever-popular “Murder on the Railway” evening on 16th August. There are also Thomas-themed weekends on 30th and 31st August, an Afternoon Tea event on 7th September, and the exciting Railway 200 celebration weekend on 12th and 13th September.
