Oakham Guided Tours are a wonderful way to discover the charm and history of Rutland’s county town. Led by knowledgeable Mayor’s Guides, the tours run every Friday at 11 am from the Rutland County Museum, starting at Easter and continuing through to the end of September each year. Outside of this main season, from October to March, tours can still be arranged but are available by appointment only.
Each walk lasts a little over an hour and offers a fascinating journey through Oakham’s streets, revealing the town’s heritage, architecture, and stories. Highlights include St Mary’s Church, with its striking spire, the Original School Building dating back to 1584, and the impressive Oakham Castle. The castle is especially notable for being the best-preserved Norman Great Hall in England, famous for its collection of over 200 ceremonial horseshoes donated by visiting royalty and peers. Many tours finish at the Castle, where visitors can also enjoy refreshments in the nearby café.
The cost of the standard guided tour is £8 per person, making it an affordable way to experience Oakham’s history. Special themed events are also offered occasionally. For example, on Saturday 9 August, a one-off guided tour includes not only the town’s historic highlights but also tea and a sweet treat at the Castle Cottage Café, priced at £14 per person.
Blending rich history with gentle storytelling, Oakham Guided Tours provide an enjoyable and informative way to experience one of England’s most picturesque small towns.
