Nestled in Sandtoft on the historic Isle of Axholme, the Trolleybus Museum celebrates transport heritage with one of the world’s largest preserved collections of trolleybuses—more than 60 vehicles housed on a former WWII RAF airfield from 1969. The museum opens on selected weekends and Bank Holidays from Easter through mid-November, plus weekdays during the Easter, May half-term, and August school holidays. For example, Open Days are scheduled for 9–10 August, with weekday openings from 18–21 August. Admission on standard open days is £12 for adults, £10 for seniors (61+), £6 for children, and family tickets at £31—with free readmission for 12 months on standard days.
Beyond riding the vintage trolleybuses, visitors can embark on free motorbus tours through the surrounding reclaimed fenland landscape. The museum also offers immersive exhibits: a cycleshop museum, a toy and model museum housed in an original 1950s prefab structure, traditional shop-window displays, a lecture-theatre cinema, and even nature trails for a touch of outdoor exploration.
Tractors Weekend (28–29 June): Tractor and farm equipment displays, plus vintage trolleybus rides and motorbus tours. Opens 10:30–16:30.
Sandtoft Gathering (Sunday 27 July): The museum’s flagship event runs 10:30–17:30 and features visiting classic cars, buses, extended motorbus tours, trolleybus demonstrations, entertainment, and a real-ale beer tent.
Whether you’re a transport enthusiast, history lover, or family seeking a unique day out, the museum captures mid-century charm in a beautifully restored setting. With interactive exhibits, scenic tours, themed events, and immersive nostalgia, it’s a vibrant blend of history and hands-on fun.
